Easy Lactation Cookie Recipe for Breastfeeding Mums
Breastfeeding is a journey full of ups and downs, and I’ve felt both in the first month of being a mum.
My baby was born prematurely, she just couldn't wait to see what the world had to offer. The downside is that my body was not ready to feed my little one, at least to the requirements she needed for a full belly.
We supplemented what I couldn't produce with formula - believe me all I wanted to do was breastfeed - I'd imagined many times holding my baby in my arms as she suckled at my breast, the two of us bonding - but right my only priority was helping my baby feel full and happy.
As long as your baby is fed, safe and warm... you are doing a great job mama!
I really resonated with the term "liquid gold" when referring to breast milk. Every single drop was precious. God forbid, any spilled, tears would definitely follow.
Feeling grateful that I was able to produce some milk at least, every time I caught up with her demands, she would start needing more. Its an emotional rollercoaster, but I am determined to make it work.
These lactation cookies, along with the guidance of a wonderful lactation consultant, is giving me the confidence to keep going. They are packed with milk-boosting ingredients like oats and brewer’s yeast, and they’ve become a staple in my breastfeeding routine.
I also found that I forgot to eat regularly as I took care of mini me, and these cookies really helped increase my calorie intake.
If you’re looking for a tasty way to support your milk supply, this easy lactation cookie recipe might be just what you need!
Why These Lactation Cookies Are a Must-Try
Ready in under 30 minutes with easy-to-find ingredients.
Includes galactagogues like oats and brewer’s yeast, which are known to support milk production.
Perfect for breastfeeding mums and a delicious snack for the whole family (however I am still trying to persuade my fiancé to try one... he's convinced he'll start lactating)
The recipe below makes around 24 cookies (depending how big you roll them).
Easy Lactation Cookies Ingredients
• 100 g (1/2 cup) softened butter or coconut oil
• 60 g (1/3 cup) brown sugar
• 1 egg
• 1 tsp vanilla extract or paste
• 110 g (1 cup) oats
• 100 g (3/4 cup) flour
• 1/2 tsp baking powder
• 30 g (1/4 cup) LSA (linseed, sunflower, almond mix)
• 1–2 tbsp (10–20 g) brewer’s yeast (optional)
• 150 g (1 cup) chocolate chips
How to Make Lactation Cookies
- Preheat the oven to 180°C.
- Stir in all the wet ingredients with a wooden spoon until creamy.
- softened butter, brown sugar, egg, and vanilla extract.
- Mix in all the dry ingredients so well combined.
- oats, flour, baking powder, LSA, and brewer’s yeast.
- Stir in chocolate chips, the dough will feel sticky—don’t worry, that’s normal!
- Wet your hands to roll tablespoonfuls of dough into balls. Place them on a lined baking tray (to save time I like to use Reusable Non-Stick Baking Mats) and gently flatten with a wet fork.
- Bake for 8–10 minutes for soft, chewy cookies or up to 15 minutes for a crispier texture.
- Let cookies cool before transferring to an airtight container.
My Tips for Perfect Lactation Cookies
If the dough feels too sticky, chill it in the fridge for 30 minutes before rolling into balls.
Make a double batch and freeze the dough balls. You can bake them fresh whenever you need a quick snack!
I keep these cookies next to my breastfeeding station—they’re a delicious treat during late-night feeds.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can non-breastfeeding people eat these cookies?
Yes! No matter what my fiancé says, they’re perfectly safe and delicious for everyone. If someone doesn’t like the slightly bitter taste of brewer’s yeast, just leave it out. You can also add more sugar if you want a sweeter cookie.
Do lactation cookies really work?
For many mums, the key ingredients like oats and brewer’s yeast help support milk production. Combined with staying hydrated and a good breastfeeding routine, they can make a big difference.
How many should I eat?
Breastfeeding mums typically need an extra 500 calories per day. Eating 4–6 cookies throughout the day is a great way to meet that need.
