I’ve built a solid foundation of clients and projects that have kept me busy as a digital marketer. But if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that relying on just one income stream can be risky. 

Platforms can change, client needs can fluctuate, and there’s only so much time in a day. That’s when I decided to diversify my income and explore something that felt a little more passive—Etsy.

While digital marketing and social media management are fulfilling, they often involve a lot of time actively selling, pitching, and communicating with clients.

What if I could bring in income without having to hustle constantly?

I felt like Etsy could be that passive income stream I needed. At first, though, I hesitated. I wanted my life to be simpler, less about the constant grind.

Would it be worth the effort to dive into a new platform and learn the ropes?

Etsy is a massive marketplace with millions of buyers. For someone like me, already skilled in digital marketing, it was an easy choice. Etsy is a platform that allows you to sell digital products, handmade goods, or vintage items, and it gives you a ready audience looking to buy unique, high-quality products.

However, what truly attracted me was the potential for passive income. With digital products, for example, you can make a sale at any time of the day, even while you’re sleeping! This means that instead of constantly pitching and chasing leads, you can work on something once and continue earning from it indefinitely.

The Challenge: Getting Started

I’ll be honest: the biggest challenge for me was knowing where to start. Etsy can be overwhelming, especially when you don’t know what will sell or how to optimise your listings to get noticed. I spent a lot of time reading blogs, watching tutorials, and getting familiar with what it takes to rank high on Etsy’s search engine.

One of my key takeaways was this: Time and effort upfront will pay off. 

With Etsy listings, you can't just “set it and forget it”. You’ll need to continually optimise your listings, stay updated on trends, and improve your SEO.

How I Approach My Etsy Shop

I wanted my Etsy shop to offer buyers variety, but also to have a personal touch that made my shop stand out. I knew that standing out on Etsy meant branding everything carefully—from the products to the listings themselves. 

Here’s how I’m doing it:

• Consistent Branding.

I make sure that everything I sell is clearly tied to my brand. Whether it’s the fonts, colors, or tone of voice in my product listings, everything aligns to create a cohesive look. This helps build brand recognition and makes my shop feel professional.

• Creativity.

One of my favourite aspects of this journey has been the creative process. Designing products and putting them together in a way that’s visually appealing has been fun. Whether it’s digital downloads or other types of products, I enjoy knowing that I’m offering something unique and helpful to customers. I'll research what sells and put my own unique spin on it.

Tips for Improving Your Etsy Listings

The biggest way to stand out on Etsy is by making sure your listings are optimised. After some trial and error (and a lot of research!), here are the tips I swear by to improve your Etsy listings and boost your visibility:

1. Optimise Your Titles

A strong title is crucial for getting noticed in Etsy’s search results. It should:
  • Be clear and descriptive: Let buyers know exactly what the product is.
  • Include relevant keywords: Use search terms your target audience is likely to use.
  • Maximize Etsy’s character limit: You have up to 140 characters, so use them wisely!
Example: Instead of just calling it “Soy Candle,” try something like “Lavender Soy Candle - Aromatherapy, Eco-Friendly, Relaxing Home Decor.” This includes both descriptive language and keywords that buyers are more likely to search for.

2. Craft Compelling Product Descriptions

A product description is where you can convince a buyer that your item is exactly what they need. Here’s how to make it shine:
  • Use bullet points: List key features and benefits to make it easier for customers to scan.
  • Be specific: Highlight the unique aspects of your product (materials, benefits, dimensions, etc.).
  • Incorporate relevant keywords: But avoid keyword stuffing—make it read naturally.

3. Use High-Quality Photos

Photos are your virtual storefront, so make them count:

• Use natural light: It makes your product look more inviting and true to its colors.

• Show multiple angles: Offer a complete view of your product, showing off its details.

• Add lifestyle images: If you’re selling something wearable or for the home, show it in use.

4. Set Competitive Prices

Pricing is an important decision that can influence a customer’s choice:
  • Check out the competition: Look at what similar products are priced at and set your price accordingly.
  • Cover your costs: Don’t forget about Etsy fees, production costs, and shipping. Aim to price your products so that you can make a profit while staying competitive.
  • Offer discounts: Periodic sales or bundling can help increase your visibility and attract new buyers.

5. Use Tags Effectively

Etsy gives you 13 tags per listing. Use them all and make sure they’re relevant to your product. Think about all the ways a potential buyer might search for your product and use those variations in your tags.

6. Improve Your Shop’s SEO

Etsy’s internal search engine ranks products based on several factors, including your shop’s overall SEO. 

Here are a few ways to optimise your shop:
  • Optimise your shop name and profile: Include keywords in your shop name and bio.
  • Create a detailed shop announcement: Explain what you offer and what makes you unique.
  • Get reviews: Positive reviews build trust and improve your search ranking on Etsy.

7. Regularly Monitor and Adapt

Use Etsy’s analytics to track how your listings are performing. Look for trends in keywords, traffic sources, and conversion rates, and tweak your listings accordingly.
